Due to the heat wave, the afternoon shift for Bakersfield has been canceled. We will still be heading out there in the morning to protest in front of Fong’s office concerning the ICE detention center in Cal-City, how he failed us by voting for the big ugly bill, lack of checks and balances, and Trump’s normalization of deploying the national guard to intimidate the people.

Last time we were allowed to park in the same parking as his office. After all, we were there to see him. The police helped facilitate a conversation with one of his aides and we were able to drop off letters at his office.

Social Event

Our group is experiencing burnout.  I talked to a number of people at the protest last weekend that are starting to feel hopeless.  We need to do some self-care and regain our footing. I would like to encourage people to spend time in our community to do something enjoyable: Go to Ridgecrest City Nights on 8/23 instead of the morning protest.

I understand that May Day is calling for a national protest on Labor Day, but this is a 4 day weekend for the Base. Our goal is to be a presence for the town to see to give them courage to resist and inform people who aren’t paying attention that there are real issues in our country. It doesn’t seem effective to protest when not many people will see us. Instead, take advantage of the long weekend or invite your friends and neighbors over for a barbecue.

We will reconvene in September stronger.
