“First they came for” updated

A revision to Martin Niemöller’s “First they came for,” poem for today.

First they came for the Separation of Church and State
And I did not speak out
Because I was a not an atheist

Then they came for evolution
And I did not speak out
Because I was not an archeologist

Then they came for climate change
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a scientist

Then they came for the press
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a journalist

Then they came for the vaccines
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a doctor

Then they came for Congress
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a politician

Then they came for the judiciary
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a judge

Then they came for the military
And I did not speak out
Because I was not enlisted

Then they came for the federal workers
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a civil servant

Then they came for the DEI
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a minority

Then they came for the law firms
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a lawyer

Then they came for the universities
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a professor

Then they came for free trade
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a manufacturer

Then they came for public assistance
And I did not speak out
Because I was not disadvantaged

Then they came for immigrants
And I did not speak out
Because I was not an migrant worker

Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me

We the people are the last line of defense.  When one of us gets attacked, we must stand together in solidarity.

Act now before it’s too late
