Weather: I considered changing our hours, but I spoke to several people today who like our current time window. Our group comes prepared for being outdoors and we’re already half way thru July which are the peak temperatures. Know your limits and retreat indoors when you need to. I will watch for heat waves and if there is one we will shift to 8-10am for that day.
Ridgecrest City Council Meetings: Have concerns as a resident of Ridgecrest? You are allowed 5 minutes to bring issues to the council on topics not on the agenda that are relevant to the city. The council members are not required to respond to you after you speak, but may have something to say in their closing remarks (stay til the end.) This opportunity is open after the presentations portion of the meeting. You are also allowed to comment on topics that are on the agenda during their outlined schedule. However, presentations are typically not open for discussion.
Protest Recap: We about 60 people with 5 new comers today. For a non-national protest day, that was encouraging to see. This is a good sign that people are gaining courage to speak up, and new people also gives us fresh energy to push forward.
Motorists still encouraged us today with some honks, but mostly waves and thumbs up. Motorists seemed less enthusiastic compared to previous protests where we saw a lot of smiles and heard cheers. Before, we were giving the town hope that the people could fight back and be heard- but Rep. Fong didn’t listen. It is easy to get depressed after seeing Congress vote for something that they knew was bad but did it away because they had marching orders. It’s dark and depressing times, but there is still light at the end of the tunnel. Don’t lose hope yet. We still have a chance.
After our Bakersfield protest and speaking to Fong’s aid, I didn’t expect to be able to change his mind. He was going to vote for whatever Trump wanted, even if that meant bad things for his district. It was apparent then and as it is now, that he needs to be unseated in the next election. The primary is June 2026. Starting this fall, we will:
- Help get people registered to vote
- Fund raise to host a townhall
- Support more district CA-20 events
- Get out the vote
We will have a busy year ahead of us, but we’ve already completed 19 protests. What’s another 20?
